IBEW LOCAL 164 - ORGANIZING
Local 164 is committed to organizing union representation for those seeking a third-party representative to serve as a liaison between company management and the employees. There are many reasons for unionizing, including substandard wages, unfair treatment, poor working conditions and unsafe job practices. If a group of employees has tried to get management to discuss their concerns, but you keep getting put off, or worse - there's a rumor that the "squeaky wheels" may find themselves unemployed in the near future - then Local 164 is for you!
The benefit of Local 164 representation is simple - when you join a union, you're not alone anymore! As a union member, you have a better chance of being heard because you're coming from a position of unity and strength!
If you're already a member, always remember the old saying: "A chain is only as strong as its weakest link." Local 164's strength can only be maintained by bringing your brothers and sisters into the union. Here are some things you can be doing to help make your Local 164 stronger:
1. Identify and communicate with non-organized electricians Show More
This is crucial to our success. Non-organized workers have the same wants, goals and needs as you. They are churchgoers, sports fans, and PTA members. Ask them … "Are you a union member?" ... "Do you know how the Union has benefited me"? ... "Would you like more information about Local 164?" … and then contact us. Hide Details
2. Salting Show More
Salting nonunion jobs is the most effective method of both identifying and communicating with the unorganized workers. Salting gives the unorganized worker a firsthand exposure to the union worker. They will be sharing work tasks. They will also be sharing information that will give an insight into the individuals and also into the company they are employed by. If you would like to help in a salting campaign, then use the form below to let us know. Hide Details
3. Canvassing Show More
Whether its by phone book, by lists of electricians provided by local government agencies, or by reviewing lists of current work permits, there's a variety of ways you can help us identify who's doing electrical work in your area. And by comparing these lists with a list of our known union shops, we can identify those places where non-union electricians could be working. We could always use an extra set of hands going through the lists. Tell us if you're interested in helping out with canvassing activities. Hide Details
4. Promote Your Union Show More
Attend meetings regularly. Be active! Get involved! Share with others what you've learned at a meeting. The more voices out there, the easier it will be for us all to be heard! Hide Details
5. Be a Positive Representative of Your Union Show More
All too often we forget to tell people we are union electricians. Why is this important? Most people have formed their opinion of unions by information received from the news media. Since negative media is more marketable, strikes, walk offs and corruption are often the words the average person associated with unions. Unions very often are faceless. The image we convey is going to have a direct effect on how the public perceives us. Hide Details
